Work environment today seems to be rapidly changing, and this is the era where organizations follow the concept “survival of the fittest”. Organizations today understand that to sustain in this competitive work environment they need to be the best among all and need to maintain their unique position in the market, and to do this organizations are realizing that they require the best man power ever for the efficient and productive functioning of the various departments in the organization. Also, in this global context, we are witnessing that every organization is trying to hire and retain the most efficient talent, but the job is not done here, firms after hiring individuals not only try to maintain them but also try to frame such policies that are employee-friendly, because employee take the organization to be the best only when the expectation about the work and organizations are adequately met. Now speaking about health sector and medical profession precisely, we are aware that of all the professions, medical profession is one such profession, where individuals are required to be at a job 24/7, as the medical emergency might arise any time, work-life balance has gained the importance in medical practitioners due to the nature of its profession, where in. A doctor has to give long working hours in the hospitals and simply forego personal life, and this effects the work-life balance of the doctor. Therefore, the importance of work-life balance is rather more important for such individual. The paper focuses on the basic understanding of work-life balance and its importance to medical practitioners.

 
 
 

Dynamic environmental and complex organizational goals are increasingly forcing the organizations to face new challenges in managing them. Be it managing the finance or human resources or marketing efforts. In the recent past, Human Resource Management (HRM) has also witnessed emergence of various new issues—work-life balance is one such issue, which is gaining more attention of the academic and the management professionals. Organizations are keenly interested to retain the best talent with them by designing employee-friendly policies. Changing identities, roles of individuals and relations among men and women have given importance in harmonizing various parts of life. And this activity of harmonizing is known as work-life balance. It is all about maintaining appropriate balance between work and personal life. Work-life balance is defined as “a concept that supports the efforts of employees to split their time and energy between work and the other important aspects of their lives. It is a daily effort to make justified distribution of their time for family, friends, community participation, spirituality, personal growth, self-care and other personal activities, in addition to the demands and requirements of the workplace”. Professionals in all walks of life face the challenge to do so.
