The use of Global Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and precision farming, hi-tech dairy farming, etc. in agriculture has not yet gained popularity. Therefore, there is the need to introduce hi-tech agriculture in Indian farms so that it could shift itself from partially commercial agriculture to fully commercial agriculture.

India produces a large variety of food crops including cereals, pulses and oilseeds. Diversified agriculture is the priority of the Central Government, and technical and financial support is being extended to farmers to encourage diversification especially in the areas of horticulture, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants, apiculture (bee-keeping) and sericulture. The government is continuously working towards the development of the agribusiness sector through considerable emphasis on infrastructure and food processing. However, there still is scope for further development and upgradation of technology and agri-infrastructure to attain world-class standards. The main emphasis is on quality enhancement, infrastructure development and the use of modern technology.

As mentioned in Technology Vision 2020, Dr. Abdul Kalam speaks, writes and works with a live vision at the back of his mind "Make India a Developed Nation". The action plan to realize this mental blueprint must place `the technology' as its topmost priority. Grooming `technology' from seed to a fruit-bearing tree is an art, science and a specialized enterprise in itself.
