The web resource extraction system is a software, which is a combination of system components or entities, database and web environment. It has been developed to enhance the input of business and companies' information into the Business Knowledge Engineering System (BKES). BKES involves the development of a business directory and Search Engine, using the Information Extraction (IE) software. The main purpose of this method is to transfer all needed web contents or information to one structured format. This system is developed to structure or integrate business information or web documents in one database, in order to allow easy and effective business search and other specific search techniques. The system is developed to allow users to search or browse business and company information or websites more precisely and effectively to meet business information needs. The retrieval modules or search techniques provided include business directory (companies and products listing), query-based search module, and business search based on user's option/scoped search module. This web extraction software enhances more precisely an effective search for business knowledge through the internet by providing various search options, such as—scoped/specific search, phrase query, directory of company, products and services and gateway to business online resources. Evidently, this web information resource extraction software that has been used in the development of BKES helped enhance business knowledge acquisition online more effectively. Since the web resource extraction system has been tested and found useful in structuring business web resources to enhance business research online, the system was also tested in bioinformatics and environment information applications. This system can also be applied to structure web documents in any other field, thereby supporting knowledge acquisition online.

The amount of information, which is exponentially increasing in amount and scope in the HTML format that can be accessed online today, has made web resources one among the largest knowledge sources accessible by the general public. However, most of the content of the websites in HTML format that were developed are found to be difficult to be accessed and manipulated. This has made the process of data or information extraction (IE) from the websites a relevant but complex task. Software modules known as "wrappers" normally conduct data extraction from HTML. An example of automatic IE from the web involves the use of wrapper that does not depend on earlier knowledge of the targeted web, including its content.
