A new trend of promoting movies on reality shows is increasingly becoming visible on the TV channels today. Movie stars are participating in reality shows or sometimes appearing as guests in reality shows for promoting their films today. It ultimately is a win-win situation for the movie stars, reality shows and the audiences. While the stars get a platform to promote their movies, the associated reality shows register high TRPs and the audiences are ultimately entertained by both the shows and the stars.

The entertainment industry is emerging as one of the most rapidly growing sector of Indian economy. It registered a growth rate of 17% in the last financial year. The advances in technology, upgradation in media tools and techniques, increasing number of multiplexes, etc., are also responsible for this growth. One of the major participants of the entertainment sector is Bollywood, which is the largest film producer concern in India and is one of the biggest and major centers of film production around the world. The Hindi film industry has become a major source of revenue generation, not only for the industry and its associated participants, but also for the government. Today, films are being produced with budgets of millions of dollars. Bollywood films and film personalities are, not only popular in India, but also have a huge fan following in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries. Films of popular stars generate huge business even in these countries. This industry is functioning like any other product or service industry by investing huge amounts, providing employment opportunities to a large number of people and definitely taking all possible measures to make profits. Since the box-office success determines the profits/losses made by the movies, the entire cast and crew of the movie is getting involved today to ensure that the movie is made and promoted in the best possible way to make it a superhit.

The journey of reality shows first began in the UK in 1964 with the grand television series `Seven Up'. Reality shows further created a revolution and became a massive hit with success of `Survivor' and `American Idol'. Following these, reality shows became popular, not only in the US and UK, but also in India. Reality TV gained immense popularity and success in the 1990s in India. These shows are present in a wide variety of forms.

The trend of promoting movies through reality shows is gaining momentum today. The Indian film industry has been facing challenges due to recession, piracy and changing preferences of viewers. Reality shows provide a cost-effective and efficient platform to promote the movies and reach a wide audience. In fact, it has become a necessity today to advertise and promote movies on the reality shows just before these are released.
