In the earlier days, machineries and equipments, buildings, money, etc., were the only factors that were considered carefully by the organization whereas human resource was not treated as an asset to the firm. The firms were of the view that there is no need to waste fund or time for the development or well-being of their workforce as they do not play a vital role in the success of an organization. The mechanization and computerization process had upgraded the concept of productivity. The companies started working out efficient and effective strategies to develop the products that are different from their competitors.

One such strategy adopted by the firm to build a strong position in the marketplace and be ahead of the competitors was to make the employees trustworthy by concentrating on their well-being and improving their competence level. Employees will be ready to work for the firm and lead the company to success if they have a feeling of mutual trust. The firms realized that the knowledge, skills, competency and ability of human capital has to be improved to create a sense of feeling of trust in the minds of the employees towards their employers that will help the firms to succeed in the competitive world of business.

Competency mapping is the process in which an employee identifies the key competency required for performing a particular job in order to be successful in the workplace during a specified period of time. It also helps in recruiting new candidates and imparting training to the present employees also.
