Diversity describes the spectrum of human similarities and differences. "As defined by the workplace diversity network, it refers to the composition of people associated with the organization, configures opportunity, interaction, communication, information and decision making to utilize the potential of diversity." As we deal with various countries and people, there is a big difference between accepting employee diversity and embracing it. To manage workforce diversity one has to be responsive to age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious, socio-economic and other non-tangible attributes of the person in the organizational setting.

Globalization is the current buzz word. The world today with the WorldWideWeb and the varied kinds of communications made available at cost-effective prices have overcome the physical barriers and have shrunk the world into a global village. Migration of persons across the globe and interdependence between individuals and organization has given rise to new challenges. Acceptance of social and cultural diversity is one of the first steps of diversity People are now not living in the large joint family structure, and believe in smaller family sizes. The changing structure of the family size and the process of individualization allow geographical relocation and give rise to global diversity.

Diversity is no new phenomenon. The world has been and is a stage of a huge mix of people with different backgrounds. Religion, caste, race, culture, behavior, socioeconomic status, gender vary across the globe. Migration of persons globally is responsible for cross cultures. The new workforce in organizations across the globe has led to a diverse workforce. There are countries like the US, Europe, Canada that have large mix of people who have migrated across borders and have a predominant presence of Asians, Hispanics, Natives and White population.
