English, an offspring of Anglo-Saxon and Indo-European cultural heritage, is a
glorious international language. Undeniably, computer and electronic media have
changed the grammatical structures and the new technology is believed to be the single largest source of new words. And in such evolutionary process, the language has been transformed into diverse classification. Gradually, it has metamorphosed into varied categories such as Academic English, Business English, Functional English, Technical English, Spoken English and Soft Skills. The complexity of English syntax and its
diversity make it difficult to speak or write effectively. “At times the process of communicating with other people in speech or writing can seem straightforward and simple.
At other times we may find it difficult and complicated” (Seely, 2009, p. 1). It is disappointing to note that the language is now taught and understood in a baffling way. It is also surprising to note that the panoramic picture of this popular language is not made available to the inquisitive learners.
Possibly, teaching or understanding of English can be made easy to the modern students through technical English. In fact, the language itself comprises technical or scientific methods in vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical structures. Evidently, technology students in engineering colleges are inclined to think in terms of scientific orientation. Though they have a basic knowledge of English, they find it difficult to apply that knowledge appropriately in specific situations. For such reasons, it is important for technical students to learn English technically for their curriculum studies at their technical institutions which help them in getting lucrative jobs and perform their skills well at the workplaces.
It is true that good command over English will lead a person to taste success in life. Apparently, conventional courses in English focus on accuracy in grammatical structures with no adequate stress on creating the right approach or appropriate design for effective language learning. As a result, a large number of students find themselves confused in grasping the true picture of English language and for this reason, it may now be called ‘the confusing modern English’ and furthermore it has become a hurdle for them to perform well in job interviews. People say that English is taught unscientifically at school, college and university levels. Grammatical deviations in modern English and changes taking place in Internet and mobile communication have become deterrents in the conversation.
