Teaching and learning a second language is always a challenging task. Several socio-cultural factors influence language learning. In the process, several revolutionary ideas take place. Hence, a language classroom must be open to creativity and innovative ideas in its teaching and learning process because development of meaningful interaction and natural communication are necessary for successful language acquisition. This paper discusses some of the creative and innovative ideas that can be implemented in an English language classroom.

Creativity and innovation are crucial for any language classroom. Especially in a second language classroom, the proficiency acquired lasts for a lifetime if it is acquired naturally and innovatively. The 21st century English Language Learner (ELL) wishes to acquire language skills through task-based activities but not through age-old approaches like structure, grammar, etc. English Language Teacher (EL Teacher) has to give a well-defined purpose to the learner, highlighting its practical use in the day-to-day world of trade, commerce, science, technology and interpersonal communication. Similarly, a learner should be provided with many opportunities to use the language learned in as many situations as possible or available. It is the teacher who has to adopt innovative and creative tasks to make the English classroom lively and motivating. Based on my personal experience, some of the innovative tasks that can be practiced in English classroom are as follows:

  • Task-based activities
  • Contests
  • Language games
  • Video or movie sharing
  • Media literacy
  • Translation
  • Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) programs.
