In today’s escalating world of competition, professionals are often under pressure to achieve more than what they are capable of. Hence, a professional must sound more impressive and effective, influence others more favorably, and enhance relationships with colleagues, customers and managers alike. According to Harold S Geneen, the five essential entrepreneurial skills which determine one’s success are Concentration, Discrimination, Organization, Innovation and Communication. “Communication—the human connection—is the key to personal and career success.” Effective communication skills are decisive for professional excellence and can provide brand new direction to one’s career. Many professionals sincerely desire to communicate effectively but do not really know how to become adept at communication. This paper attempts to dwell on the importance of effective communication in professional life. Sound knowledge of the subject, systematic and meticulous delivery and appropriate body language are the crucial building blocks of effective communication. Those who relentlessly make assiduous efforts to master these building blocks of communication can overcome the impediment of ineffective communication and become effective communicators. |

Amidst pervasively intensifying competitive conditions, effective communication
plays a prominent role in one’s professional excellence. According to Harold
S Geneen1, the five essential entrepreneurial skills which determine one’s success are Concentration, Discrimination, Organization, Innovation and Communication. “Communication—the human connection—is the key to personal and career success” (Paul J Meyer2). Communication also has a decisive effect on diverse spheres like family, work and relationships. However, to communicate clearly, thoughtfully and impressively is a challenge that confronts most of the modern professionals today. For centuries, those who can speak impressively in public have been held in high esteem, and it is all the more paramount for today’s professionals’ success. Amidst the swirling noise of the machines in a manufacturing setup or the silent high-tech service organizations, the ability to communicate effectively can put a professional in the driver’s seat of success. No matter how great or talented a person is, he may not be successful if he is an ineffective communicator. Great communicators are endowed with exceptional capacity to speak and build a climate of openness to make people listen attentively, leading to personal effectiveness. Most of the vibrant speakers of the modern era have certain characteristics in common that make them listeners’ pleasure. The most important building blocks of effective communication are as given below.
