Since time immemorial, communication has been an integral part of human interaction,
and as the technology advances, we are constantly attempting to multiply the ways of
communication among ourselves at different distances and various locations.
Communication is our first and foremost necessity. The uses of communication are
expanding along with the modern business needs, broadening in the process its
functional areas. The transmission of information is a very challenging process, as it
passes from one point to another through various obstructions known as barriers. The
transmission of message between individuals, or from one to many, is an intricate
process and might face many errors. If we closely observe the model of communication
process, we can observe that there are some specific vulnerable points during the
transmission of message from the source to the sender, and during its passing throughthese stages, the probability of its being erroneous gets multiplied. Some researchers
in the area of social psychology have estimated that there is usually a 40-60% loss
of meaning in the transmission of messages from the source to the receiver. Another
study confirms that employees in various organizations mostly spend over 75% of
their time in an interpersonal network of communicative situation. Therefore, it is
no surprise to find that the root cause of many management or business organizational
problems can be traced to bad supply of information. All the employees do not have
the maturity in terms of work experience interacting with each other through various
types of communication tools. The problem gets multiplied when such lapses happen
in various units of business process whether during production or channeling
distribution or planning strategic move to market or selling those goods/units. It is
highly important to be cautious of such potential sources causing communication
barriers, in order to avoid troublesome hurdles and ensure minimal loss of meaning.
In the present research paper, various kinds of barriers to effective communication
have been discussed in detail. Two conceptual frameworks have also been introduced
to understand the fatal implications of communication barriers.
