The paper attempts to understand the essence of ‘Probing skill’ for interpersonal effectiveness. Today’s managers are faced with the challenge of not only asking the right questions but also putting it in the right manner to get the desired results. The need to give importance to probing and its benefits in the corporate world is also explored in the paper.

Communication skills determine the attitude and altitude of a person. The power of one’s communication is influenced by several discrete components such as vocabulary, body language, listening and written language skills. A key variable which is most often forgotten or neglected is the probing skill. Probing is very much a skill because it can be nurtured only when practiced, and cannot be acquired overnight.

The legendry German classical scholar, Friedrich Nietzsche’s candid words—“He who has a why can endure any how”—sum up the power of probing.
