In modern days, constructions are fully mechanized which increase the cost of equipment up to 30%. Proper planning, selection, procurement, installation, operation, maintenance and replacement of equipment play an important role in equipment management for the successful completion of the project. With the growing use of machinery, it has become necessary for construction engineers to be thoroughly familiar with the construction application and upkeep of the wide range of the modern equipment (Cox, 1971).

Equipment manager’s main task is to reduce downtime, achieve optimum equipment utilization and increase production at minimum cost. The cost analysis and the will of adopting fine proper techniques suited to the situation are the basic factors for the success and therefore, there is a need for rational planning, proper selection and judicious deployment of equipment in relation to the conditions to achieve optimum utilization (Lapinski, 1978). Equipment engineer should coordinate with various wings of the organization in discharging the job of equipment planning, balancing, selection of equipment and its utilization, personnel selection and training, financial planning, preventive maintenance and general supervision.

A brief idea about the equipment, planning, manpower, labor relation, nature of projects, forecasting equipment, scientific planning, quantum of work, utilization of time and period, equipment operation, computerization of various equipment management and advantages of using equipment is needed for any large construction project. Equipment is required for such bigger project right from clearing the site and earthwork excavation to completion of the project. Once the equipment needed is identified for the particular project, the cost and duration of the equipment and the necessary auxiliary equipment/ instruments are to be planned. Scheduling has to be done with the help of available tools for the required equipment and proper and effective utilization.
