The Harmony Between Vocabulary Building Competency and Comprehension Skills: Experimental Technology-Enhanced Methods for Strengthening Word Power

A concrete knowledge base of vocabulary is essential to facilitate effective skills of language acquisition and comprehension capabilities. Vocabulary building is an important aspect of achieving language proficiency and academic excellence. For this reason, vocabulary has great significance in contemporary English language teaching curricula. There is a harmonious and well-established relationship between the knowledge of vocabulary and reading comprehension. This paper focuses on the need for using ‘technology-driven methods’ on an experimental basis to enhance vocabulary building competencies, which in turn enhance skills of reading comprehension. This paper gives an overview of the intimate relationship between knowledge of vocabulary and skills of comprehension, and presents the various technological means that trigger rapid and efficient vocabulary acquisition and perfect reading proficiency. Finally, the efficacy of technology utilization in augmenting vocabulary acquisition and comprehension is examined.

 
 

The importance of firm knowledge base of vocabulary in the process of language acquisition has been overshadowed by other aspects of English learning. However, the importance of this vital aspect in mastering the essential language skills has become predominant over the times. Consequently, the role of vocabulary is receiving immense emphasis in language teaching curriculum. There are many reasons for this increased interest in vocabulary building, both from the students’ point of view and the trainers’ perspective. The prime causes for such improved attention towards strong vocabulary building include: the impact of comprehension-based methodology in language learning processes; the persistent research efforts of applied linguists; and the numerous possibilities created by the development of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) mechanisms. For all these reasons, it is now often referred that there is a mutual and an indispensable relationship between the knowledge of vocabulary and reading comprehension. As many applied linguists and trainers often point out, vocabulary building is a prerequisite for gaining a comprehensive view of the thoughtfully composed ideas in the given text and also for accomplishing academic excellence.
