Woman is the creator of world and without woman there is no existence. Though sex is
a natural phenomenon and is necessary for the continuity of human race, sexual
exploitation is the worst form of degradation. Chastity is very important for Indian
women and moreover, virginity is considered essential for a woman. This paper deals
with the effects of rape, gang rape and rape against Dalits in India and also deals with
the human rights of the raped women, particularly dalit women. It also deals with the
laws which exist, i.e., the National laws such as the provisions under the Indian
Constitution, Criminal Law, Human Rights Act, and the International Law, besides
the latest statistics on rape.
Rape is an act that degrades women. It is an act that shocks and shakes the roots of
human conscience. It is not only a brutal attack on the integrity and dignity of a
woman, but also disregards her legitimate control over her body. It is perhaps the only
crime where instead of being sympathized with, a victim is socially ostracized and
morally degraded with a lifelong stigma on her dignity and character. The mental
torture in such cases is deep and the agony unbeatable.1 The violation of integrity
subjects a woman to shame and humiliation.
