Cohen and Promodita, please accept our congratulations on your recently published book Entrepreneurs in Every Generation: How Successful Family Businesses Develop Their Next Leaders? Can you please give us an overview of the book?
Allan R Cohen (AC)/ Pramodita Sharma (PS): Thank you. This is a book about how families around the world that are successful at producing innovative, entrepreneurial leaders across generations are able to do it. We use documented, published examples of what has worked—occasionally contrasted with spectacular failures—to provide ample opportunities to see what might fit any particular family in its circumstances. In researching for this book, we quickly realized that growing the right kind of entrepreneurial leaders requires numerous practices for developing individual family members, related practices for creating entrepreneurial families, and many practices and processes for developing entrepreneurial, innovative organizations. No one individual, family or organization does everything, at any time, and there is no magic formula that guarantees success. Nevertheless, over time, the practices we identified increase the odds of success considerably. We wanted to develop a book that is grounded in rigorous theory and research, but eminently practical and useful. All our findings are turned into possible action steps for individuals, families, and family organizations. |
