People have often asked me, “how did you go from being a theater professional to being an expert on organizational leadership,” and my answer is that the study and performance of theater—especially of the classics—is really the study of the human condition, how great leaders rise and fall, how societies and institutions organize themselves for better and often for worse. They say that art often imitates life; and that’s especially true with theater. And then, by pure chance almost 30 years ago, I was engaged by the New York City Police Department to help them use live, professional, improvizational theater as a training tool for police officers who were learning how to manage emotionally disturbed persons in public spaces. It was in developing and delivering this program that I came to realize how powerful, memorable and effective live theater can be used as a leadership training tool in organizations. In one way or another, I’ve been using the techniques of professional theater in all of my work as a speaker, trainer, even as an executive coach. |
