The paper investigates and compares the performance parameters like load, delay, throughput, and data sent and received for a wireless network. The study has been conducted using two network simulators, Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) and Opnet Modeler (IT Guru Academic Edition), which are widely used in the field of network simulations . The network that has been selected is the wireless network consisting of 12 nodes each with Ad-hoc Ondemand Distance Vector (AODV) as routing protocol, the application used is FTP (File Transfer Protocols) and the bandwidth selected is 11 Mbps for all kind of communications.
Wireless Networks are networks which communicate with other networks and wireless
devices without any need of physical media. In other words, these networks use wireless
media for communication and transfer of data. Wireless communication is identified
by IEEE standard 802.11, 802.15 and their sub-divisions (Mishra and Jangale, 2014).
It can be implemented using a handful of network protocols. Network protocols
are the pre-defined standard, set of rules that comprise all the procedures and formats
that explain every detail of communication between various network devices over one
or the other network (Weingartner et al., 2009). Network protocols must be defined
and installed by the sender and receiver to ensure network communication and also
apply them to all the hardware and configure them accordingly. Several types of
network protocols are:
