Terrorism is not confined to one country but has spread its tentacles to every corner of the world with some countries, mostly Islamic countries, supporting and encouraging terrorist activities. The world leaders declared war on terrorism following World Trade Center tragedy on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The twin towers of the World Trade Center that stood as towering examples of man's ingenuity, strength and hard work are in shambles.
In a show of solidarity, the NATO allies offered the US unprecedented military support in the battle against international terrorism. Russia and the European Union plan to step up cooperation to fight international terrorism. China, India, Pakistan, as well as Central and South-East Asian countries have all proclaimed their support for an international effort against the terror groups. The US action against Taliban seems imminent.
Revenge, if it is unaccompanied by self-examination, accomplishes little. There are other ways also to right wrongs and to resolve conflicts. While some in other parts of the world cheered openly the loss of American lives, Jordan's King Abdullah II said the attacks in the United States would not have taken place if the Middle East problem had been resolved.
Naturally, a thought enters every individual's mind as to why suddenly the world leaders have woken up to the gravity of the problem known as terrorism, now. Is this not there for so many years? Are so many innocent lives not being snuffed out daily in so many parts of the world? Has India not been shouting from the rooftop about this danger? It took the destruction of one of the world's tallest structures by some terrorists to wake up the world, towards the dangers of terrorism, from its slumber. Why?
