Coffee retailing in India is undergoing a sea change. New generation coffee retailers have arrived armed with wide variety of flavors and a superior experience. Riding on their initial success and with prospects looking bright these chains are expanding fast to increase their presence and become a part of the Indian consumers' life.
India's own brand of coffee culture seems to have arrived. The Qwiky's, Coffee Days and the Baristas are here and promise much more than just the coffee. These coffee parlors are not just in the business of selling coffee, or a quick bite to go with it, but are in the lifestyle business The well-lit trendy coffee chains serve a wide variety of coffee flavors in an ambience where visitors can unwind themselves by indulging in various activities like playing chess, scrabble or listen to the music and watch cricket on TV.
What we are witnessing today could be called the second wave in organized coffee retailing. The first wave was set in motion mainly due to the efforts of the Indian Coffee Cess Committee way back in 1936 and resulted in the opening up of India Coffee Houses all over the country. At one time, the Coffee Board managed a chain of 72 coffee houses and attempted to introduce the coffee habit in the predominantly tea drinking North of the country.
