After connecting people it's time for mobile manufacturers to come up with smarter moves, i.e., start manufacturing mobile handsets in India.

The Indian telecom industry has made remarkable progress in the last two to three years. The falling cellular tariff rates have triggered growth in the telecom sector. The growth rate in the subscriber base in India is next only to China. The high growth rate and development in the telecom industry in India shows how the right initiative from the government (opening up the telecom sector to private participation) can allow an industry to flourish.

In India over 1.5 million subscribers are added to the cellular services every month. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), about 17.49 million subscribers were added to the mobile services in the year 2003 and during the year 2004 the number was 19.50 million, making it a total of 48 million mobile subscribers by the end of year 2004. The year 2004 also saw the mobile subscriber base surge past the fixed line subscribers in October. Experts predict that this figure will rise to 100 million in the next few years. But the irony is that though the service operators have made a mark and subscribers are growing at a high rate, the mobile handsets used are imported.
