Basel norms are the recommendations on banking laws and regulations issued by the Basel Committee on banking supervision in 1988 by the central bankers from around the world. The book Basel Norms - Impact on Business edited by Preeti Phuskele, is an attempt to highlight the impact and various implications of Basel norms on/for banks in various countries. The Basel Committee published these recommendations on banking laws for banks all over the world known as Basel Accord. Since 1988, Basel has been progressively adopted by banks in many countries. It was kown as Basel I. In June 1999, the committee issued a more comprehensive proposal for a new Capital Adequacy Framework, popularly known as Basel II.

It was framed with an objective to modernize the capital requirements framework to make it more comprehensive and risk-sensitive, taking into account many modern financial institutions' risk management practices. The Basel II is more sensitive to the real risks that an organization faces. It also considers operational risks such as the breakdown of the systems or wrong doings of the people. The Internal-Ratings-Based (IRB) approach suggested in Basel II framework, allows the firms to rely on their own estimates of credit risk. The Advanced Measurement Approach (AMA) is also introduced in Basel II which allows firms to consider operational risks in assessing the capital adequacy. Basel II framework not only provides flexibility and an opportunity to adopt the most appropriate approaches, but also provides a sophisticated risk management method. Although the Basel Committee on banking supervision is not a formal regulatory authority, it still has a great influence over the banking supervision authorities in many countries.

The expectation is that the committee can achieve common approaches and common standards in the international banking industry. The book is divided into two sections. The first section titled "Basel II Perspectives" discusses the conceptual and introductory part highlighting the impact of Basel II. It also tries to discuss the implications of Basel II on business, banks, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) financing, microfinancing, etc., in detail. The second section of the book is "Basel II Global Experience". This section describes the experiences of various banks/financial institutions around the globe regarding the implementation of the accord.
