Relationship between personality and Quality of Work Life (QWL) was studied in the colleges and universities in Haryana. Five dimensions of personality and eight dimensions of QWL were measured on 200 randomly selected teachers, using NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and QWL Scale. Correlational analysis was carried out. Three dimensions of personality are positively correlated with the QWL. Extroversion is positively related to opportunities to use and develop human capacity. Agreeableness is positively related to social integration in the work force. Conscientiousness is positively related to opportunities to use and develop human capacity, social integration in the work force and constitutionalism in the work organization.
Personality is the pattern of characteristics, thoughts, feelings and behaviors that differentiates one person from another and that persists over time and situations (Phares, 1991). Psychologists use the theories of personality to describe individual attributes of people as well as for the study and treatment of mental conditions. Personality traits are psychological in nature, stable over time, and provide the reasons for behavior. They reflect who we are in aggregate and determine our affective, behavioral, and cognitive style.
One of the largest debates within the literature on personality psychology is how many independent factors of personality exist (Goldberg, 1995). Cattell (1945) identified 35 clusters as the "standard reduced personality sphere" with 12 underlying primary factors. At about the same time, Eysenck (1947) was also working to develop factor-based models of personality. Norman (1963) researched on big five factor and the given big five model of personality. |
