We are living in a world where we find that no organization is an island. Globalization and growth of Information and Communication technologies have positioned our lives and the organizations in a maze of connections. These networks are creating a necessity for collaboration in enabling organizations to gain on a number of fronts like resources, skills, customers and markets. Hence, collaborations are increasingly becoming popular and need to be adopted and fostered for an increased sustained growth.
With the advent of globaliza tion and the growth of information and communication technologies, the world has become a smaller place to explore. Organizations the world over which differ in size, scope, culture, aims and approaches and also the objectives, are fast exploring the new available opportunities. Whatever the business the organizations are in, they are faced with a numerous challenges with regard to their resources and the expectations of the stakeholders. Till date, only a single organization has largely been the focus for analyzing the competing capabilities of various organizations. But now the focus has shifted from studying the competing abilities to analyzing the collaborating capabilities of organizations. This shift in focus is largely due to the understanding that, in today’s competitive scenario, no single organization can gain on all the fronts. Every single organization needs to work with other organizations and thereby gain from a combination of skills, experience and resources. Collaborative working of organizations has in fact, become a necessity and the only viable option available in a fast changing competitive scenario which includes the fast changing expectations of the stakeholders. Though history has put forth situations in which organizations have connected with other stakeholders like customers, suppliers etc., these connections were merely transactional ones. But now, the once so called independent entities are viewing these transactions more strategically and are trying to develop their own ecosystem, which contains the right components that not only support their aims and objectives both in the short run as well as the long run, but also maintain the overall health of the ecosystem so established.
