When a stress is created by undesirable outcomes, it is called dysfunctional stress, negative stress or “distress”. But when stress is created by desirable and successful outcomes, it is called a positive stress, functional stress or “eustress”.
Stress can be defined as a change in the state of a person due to sensing of a pressure posed by a situation. Stress is the outcome of transition of situations. Transition or change is the basic law of universe. A situation may provide favorable or unfavorable results to a person. But this favorability or unfavor ability of a situation is personal; it depends on the nature, intuitions, perceptions and interests of a person. A favorable situation of one person may be unfavorable to another. For e.g., the damage or fault of a car is an unfavorable situation for its owner because of the inconveniences rendered by this situation to him. But at the same time this situation may be a favorable one for a mechanic and a spare parts dealer. Situational change is natural and is an endless process. No situation is static; it has a beginning and an end. This is the major cause for stress. The end of a situation is the beginning of another.
