Tata, one of the pioneer industrial houses of the country, has a formidable presence in the telecom sector too. Incorporated in 1996, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) is a part of the Rs. 54,000 cr Tata Group. With an investment of over Rs. 9,000 cr, the group has a redoubtable presence in the telecom value chain in the country. The company has a strong workforce of 5,500, serves 16 lakh customers in over 50 locations and is associated with the strong ‘Tata’ brand
name, and is a tough competitor to reckon with. In an attempt to ensure a pan-India presence, TTSL is planning to roll out into the wireless space in a huge way by adding 11 new circles to the current six and targeting to reach 700 locations by December 2004.

The Tatas are planning to invest a major chunk of the proceeds of the IPO of its consultancy arm TCS into Tata Telecom. The group has identified telecom as one of the future growth triggers for itself and will be investing close to Rs. 20,000 cr over the next 3-4 years. Entering as a sixth player and lagging a year behind other big players like Reliance and Bharti, which already have a commanding lead, will TTSL be successful in emerging a winner?
