The ultimate aim of any modern corporate is growth with profit maximization. Growth is the first and foremost characteristic of nature and its products which include modern societies with all their industrial, agricultural and service sectors and above all the research organizations to cater to the needs of primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. Governed by the laws of the universe and nature, societies, markets and above all human life are in the constant churn of development in the realm of creativity and innovativeness.

5S is an accepted practice in the industry to help improve productivity. It has been found that industries that have been successful in enhancing the productivity (and won awards of excellence) have adopted this principle. The authors feel that nothing could come in the way of implementation of these principles at the office level as well as in services sector like banks. By adopting these good practices banks would be in a position to achieve quantum increase in productivity both in the front-end and back-end operations.

5S Principles would enable the bank to be more customer focused. A direct benefit from this would be increased customer satisfaction and customer delight, and resultant increased business. The paper introduces the concept of 5S (which is popular in shop floor) in offices. Thereafter, it provides proposal on its application in banks—both front office (customer) and back end (support systems) and the steps that can be taken for implementation. 5S Principles are needed for implementation of productivity improvement measures in any organization. This is a major step for any continuous improvement program in an organization in its march towards achieving leadership in its area of business.
