The practitioner-researchers discuss the goals, activities, management and development of the Bang College of Business's Career Services Center. The functions and ways in which the center adds value to the institute's role and relevance in education, to change society are examined in this paper. This success story can, in fact, be understood and better appreciated in the light of Kazakhstan's realities, and can be viewed from the spectrum of developing the institute's brand.
A country of transition economies, such as Kazakhstan where
its economic development depends on the quality of workforce,
business leaders, managers, and visionary entrepreneurs.
In turn, the quality of work force depends on the quality
of higher education in general and business education in
particular (Low and Tai, 2005a). Thus this paper discusses
the goals, activities, management and development of the
Bang College of Business's Career Services Center, and also
take a look at how the latter can contribute to the quality
of business education. The author examines its functions
and ways in which the Center adds value to the Institute's
role in education to change society.
The
Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic
Research (KIMEP) was formally established on January 1,
1992 by President Nursultan Nazarbaev of the Republic of
Kazakhstan, with the legal status of not-for-profit joint
stock company. KIMEP is constantly striving to provide the
highest level of instruction in economics, business, public
administration, and continuing education. Its language of
instruction is English and modeled along with a western
style of education (KIMEP, 2005; and Salikhova, 2001). Along
with this, KIMEP also assures the provision of the equal
opportunities of getting tertiary education for all talented
young Kazakhstanis irrespective of their financial status,
nationality and gender (The Almaty Herald, 2000:
1).
The
Bang College of Business (BCB) provides undergraduate and
graduate programs in Accounting, Finance, Marketing Management,
Operations Management, Supply chain Management and Information
Systems. The BCB has more than 1,500 students and growth
has exceeded 25% in the last year. Its goal is to train
future business and community leaders to contribute to their
organizations, country and the world (KIMEP, 2005). |
