Project initiation is a crucial step in the project management process in which the scope and quality parameters are set. It is the basic foundation for the success of the project.

Managing projects is becoming complex day by day. Given the constraints of time, cost and scope, the project manager has to approach the project in a step-by-step manner. The first step in project management is to initiate the project. Project initiation, is the most crucial step in which the project manager decides the scope of the project. This is also the time where the project manager tries to understand the business environment and puts in place the control systems, in case of any deficiencies. In this stage, a rough sketch is made of the design of the operations and the equipment which are required. The project manager also prepares the budget after making the financial analysis.

In effect, this is the stage where the project manager gets a rough idea about the entire project. Project initiation can be defined as the initial step in project management, where the planned deliverables are outlined after anticipating the activities needed to be undertaken, so as to complete the project. Here, the overall parameters of the project are determined and the quality environment required to complete the project is set. All the activities to be undertaken in the project are identified and scheduled with milestones and deadlines set to complete each and every one of them. This will establish the estimated resources needed and the costs that will have to be incurred. For the project to be successful, a project character, which establishes the project definition is developed in this stage to serve as a foundation to the future activities of the project.
