India and Ireland celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024, marking an era of warm and cordial relationships between the two for many decades. The formal relations between India and Ireland were established in 1947 after India gained independence. It was followed by several high-level visits from both sides and cooperation in a large number of areas. However, despite having decades of formal ties, the potential of the relationship remained under-tapped for a long time. In the last one-and-a-half decades, with the rising stature of India on the global high table and the equally impressive rise of Ireland, it is natural for both entities to strengthen and deepen their ties and cooperate in areas of mutual interest. This paper maps the journey and nature of the diplomatic relationship between India and Ireland. Starting with a brief historical overview of the relationship, the first section highlights the connection between the two during the Cold War era and decades after. The second section of the paper analyzes the growing significance of economic and trade relations. The last part of the paper highlights the shift in both the momentum and magnitude of relations between India and Ireland.
India and Ireland enjoy a warm and cordial relationship and demonstrate the qualities of being natural allies and trustworthy partners. Emanating from enduring historical and cultural bonding, India and Ireland have a multifaceted relationship, underlining bilateral engagement, policy initiatives and strategic choices based on
