Examining the Indigenous Knowledge Practices of Aquaculture Farmers in Relation to Occupational Health Issues in Bangladesh
Abstract

This study examines the determinants of farmers-led initiative for health management in coastal aquaculture, utilizing enhanced traditional farming methods, in southeastern Bangladesh. Data were obtained from 360 farmers in the districts of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Feni using structured questionnaires. Hierarchical logistic regression studies demonstrated that district of residence, educational attainment, training, self-assessed health, and understanding of occupational health strongly impacted the reporting of health issues. Farmers in Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar exhibited a higher likelihood of reporting health difficulties, compared to those in Feni. Individuals with less than secondary education had increased odds, whereas poor self-rated health demonstrated the most significant correlation with reported issues. Notably, trained farmers indicated a higher incidence of health problems, potentially attributable to heightened awareness, but familiarity with occupational safety measures markedly enhanced the probability of reporting. Notwithstanding the extensive implementation of hygiene and personal protective equipment procedures, environmental hazards and inadequate chemical management continue to exist. These findings highlight the significance of localized, education-sensitive health and safety interventions and indicate that increased awareness may lead to more precise health reporting. Future longitudinal and clinical studies are advised to determine causality and inform policy adjustments in Bangladesh’s aquaculture health management.
