Business Schools at the Crossroads: Strategies for Job-Proof Graduates in the AI-Quantum Age
Abstract

Indian business schools are standing at a critical juncture where the changing factors, such as artificial intelligence (AI), power of quantum computers, and Industry 4.0 technologies, are rewriting the job market. Management education has long been rooted in theoretical models and functional disciplines; these approaches, however, appear increasingly ineffective for preparing students for the dynamics of the modern world economy. There is an increasing tendency for the course to draw on technology-driven insights, internationally relevant, and capable of producing “job-proof,” rather than employable, graduates who are resilient. This paper offers a conceptual exploration of the means by which Indian business schools might effect such transformation. It begins by revisiting the evolving role of business education and its compatibility with institutional settings. Thereafter, it underscores the growing importance of technological competence, with an example of how the manager would have to combine business acumen with interdisciplinary skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, data sciences, and digital innovation. Industry expectations are discussed to give an example of how the employer increasingly values flexibility, problem-solving skills, and continuing education. At the same time, the paper also points to the impact of geopolitical factors—involving shifts in the dynamics of trade as well as the implications of education policies—impacting the employability of the outgoing student as well as the competitiveness of the institution. In addressing these challenges, the paper introduces the Techno-Strategic Business Education Model, an arrangement that locates Indian business schools at the nexus between technology integration, advances in the curriculum, and global competitiveness. It also offers strategic advice on how academic excellence may coexist with practical flexibility, thus keeping the Indian business schools relevant in an age defined by ceaseless disruption.

Introduction

Business education has been known for a long time as the bedrock for developing leaders to solve economic, social, and organizational problems. In India, the presence of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in the 1960s created a milestone that set the stage for a system that has developed globally acclaimed graduates (Chakrabarti, 2011; Porter & McKibbin, 1988).
