Attitudes and Perceived Barriers to Entrepreneurship Among Youth in Mizoram: An Analysis of Rural-Urban Perspectives
Abstract

This paper examines the entrepreneurial attitudes of college-going youth in Mizoram and the perceived barriers, with its main focus on rural-urban variations. The study adopted both descriptive research design and crosssectional approach for analysis. The cross-sectional design helped in assessing the potential differences in entrepreneurial attitudes and perceived barriers across locations (rural and urban). To assess attitudes, the study employed Attitude Towards Enterprise (ATE) scale, and to identify perceived barriers it adopted the 12 most common challenges encountered by nascent entrepreneurs in the context of a non-industrial zone. Data was collected from 320 final-year students from colleges having Entrepreneurial Knowledge Cell (EKC) across the state. The data was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test. The findings indicate that the youth exhibit positive entrepreneurial attitudes; however, these attitudes do not significantly differ between rural and urban respondents. Major barriers identified include insufficient startup capital, inadequate infrastructure, and limited awareness of government support schemes.

Introduction

Entrepreneurship is fundamental to the Indian economy, and the contributions made by entrepreneurs to the Indian economy have been enormous since they created largescale employment opportunities (NITI Aayog, 2021). Entrepreneurship has been a trend among the youth in India, and the major factor for its growing attraction is the rapid increase in unemployment among the youth.
