The dietary supplement industry faces increasing regulatory scrutiny and operational complexity due to globalized supply chains, heightened consumer expectations, and concerns about product quality and traceability. Although current good manufacturing practices (cGMP), codified in 21 CFR Part 111 and supported by 21 CFR Part 117 Subpart G, define broad quality obligations, they lack specificity regarding the operational roles of supply chain management (SCM) in ensuring compliance. This paper presents a conceptual framework that systematically maps cGMP clauses to specific SCM tasks across five key functional domains defined: Procurement Planning; Inventory and Transport Management; Distribution and Production Planning; Order and Event Management; and Collaborative Planning and Fulfillment. The framework highlights SCM as a critical enabler of cGMP compliance, performing the physical, documentation, and traceability tasks necessary for QA oversight. This contribution addresses a critical gap in QA-SCM integration within regulated industries and offers practical guidance for dietary supplement manufacturers, auditors, and system developers aiming to strengthen compliance and supply chain performance.
The dietary supplements industry is subject to increasing regulatory scrutiny and operational complexity, driven by rising consumer demand, a globalized supply base, and evolving customers’ expectations for quality and transparency.
