The paper focuses on college students’ perceptions of the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in education. Data were collected from 806 college students from Punjab (India) through a questionnaire comprising 14 items, comprising closed-ended items to quantify students’ responses and open-ended items aimed at capturing detailed qualitative insights. Quantitative data were analyzed to determine the frequency, percentage and Chi-square value, while qualitative responses were analyzed to determine the patterns. The findings reveal that AI tools are already widely used by both students and teachers. Its usage has enhanced student engagement and learning abilities, promoted personalized learning, and improved academic outcomes. Students are using AI apps for understanding the content and preparing for exams. Teachers are using AI apps for providing study material, clarifying doubts, and grading learning. However, overreliance on AI may diminish students’ critical thinking skills and create risks like data privacy and reduced pedagogical originality. Educational institutions need to formulate policies to ensure that students and teachers use AI responsibly with discernment and intellectual ownership, ensuring that they remain masters of the technology rather than being shaped by it.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing changes across governance, agriculture, health, education, sports, commerce, transportation and infrastructure (Alkhaaldi et al., 2023; Carolan, 2025; Giorgio, 2024; Reddy, 2026; Schleicher, 2026). In education, it has transformed academic learning, offering both opportunities and challenges for students’ development. This revolutionary shift became widely popular within a short time frame with the release of ChatGPT in late 2022 (Schleicher, 2026).
