Communication in an emergency situation in an organizational setup of a hospital is of utmost importance. There are various requisites such as scope for informality, presence of all patterns of communication and overcoming all the possible barriers. Then there are various requisites for effective communication. If all the conditions are fulfilled and all barriers are overcome, then only communication would be effective and the emergency would not turn into a crisis. Communication in an emergency situation should be synchronous.

All horizontal, vertical and diagonal means of communication should be available and the communication network should be a completely connected circular network. Barriers like filtering, emotional factor, inconsistent verbal communication etc., should be overcome in order to achieve the characteristics of effective communication like coordination, confirmation etc. The final thing being that the importance of feedback should be kept in mind.

Hospitals are in themselves well built organizations and communication is considered essential for any effective medical setup. The hospitals around the world now understand the importance of a proper communication because of the problems they have faced without the same. Communication serves a number of purposes in a hospital setting, for example, communication of a crisis, in the case of a serious patient, communication between the doctor and patient, communication in the due course of working etc. Also the communication setup in a hospital should have three basic characteristics i.e., it should be effective, timely and cost-effective, the third however would come into question only if the first two are achieved in their fullest sense. Also the order of priority of the three requisites should remain as has been stated because the primary motive of communication would be fulfilled only if it would be effective, the secondary motives would however be fulfilled by the subsequent steps taken for the achievement of timeliness and cost-effectiveness. Another thing that has to be kept in mind is the priority of the messages being delivered.
