The World Wide Web is a vibrant information repository. Using Web information in an effective manner christens for the use of Web Mining Techniques. Web mining techniques based on Web mining categories such as Web content mining, Web structure mining, and Web usage mining comprise of various analysis techniques, viz., clustering analysis, Web link analysis, pattern analysis, association analysis and correlation analysis. Information retrieval is a very important process in the World Wide Web because the Web consists of large number of unstructured text-based documents. Retrieving relevant information requires the use of effective techniques like keyword- based retrieval and indexing techniques. This article gives a brief introduction to Web servers and Weblog analysis and presents a detailed description on how these techniques are applied in Web mining.

As many firms depend on the Internet and the World Wide Web to conduct their business, strategies and techniques for Web mining may be useful. Organizations often create and accumulate large volumes of data in their regular operations. Most of this information is usually generated automatically by Web servers, and collected in server access logs. Analyzing such data can help these organizations determine the life time value of customers, cross marketing strategies across products, and effectiveness of promotional campaigns. Most of the existing Web analysis tools provide techniques for reporting user activity in the servers and various forms of data filtering. Such techniques provide only little analysis of data relationships among the accessed files and directories within the Web space. Certain sophisticated techniques for discovery and analysis of patterns have emerged which have been classified into `pattern discovery tools' and `pattern analysis tools'.

Web servers are the major sources of information on the Internet. The term `Web server' refers to a software program, which provides Web content, or a system running such a program. A Web server program is a piece of software that can handle requests across the Internet for Web pages, graphics and related pages. A typical Web server accepts requests from the clients and sends responses to such requests. A response might be a requested file, or an error message describing why the server could not provide the requested file and so on.
