IT Service Management: ITIL and the Emerging ISO 20000 Standard

-- S Sivakumar

Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) provides a comprehensive, public-domain process framework for IT Service Management (ITSM) to achieve improved Business IT alignment. ITIL originated in the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), UK; and over the years, has been upgraded for general applicability in all types of organizations. ITIL has been a key influence in the definition of the British StandardBS 15000, covering ITSM. With the increasing worldwide interest in streamlining IT services for better value and business focus, ISO 20000 has gained prominence. It has formally replaced BS 15000 as the certification standard for ITSM from June 2006. This article provides an introduction to ITIL, and its relation to ISO 20000.

Computer Ergonomics: Relooking at Machines vs. Environment

-- K Chandra Sekharaiah,
Md Abdul Muqsit Khan and Upakaram Gopal

In massive programming environments, large-scale data processing, data-entry applications, it is crucial to promote Human-Computer Interface (HCI) and ergonomic design features for machine components. A taxonomy of ergonomics including the human-robot interface and mobile HCI is presented in this article. It also provides a single platform for cross-fertilization of works peculiar to biomechanics, multimodal interactions and virtual books. The deleterious effects of non-ergonomic computing environments and desirable ergonomic conditions are also presented. The article presents neither an ergonomic design nor ergonomic solution, but facilitates the computer users to take care of the software ergonomic aspects of computing environments.

Genetic Programming and its Multi-dimensional Applications: A Survey

-- Satchidananda Dehuri

This survey discusses Genetic Programming (GP) and its multi-dimensional applications. GP is viewed as one of the branches of evolutionary computation, since it has the ability to evolve executable computer programs. Further, it is a robust, flexible and intuitive artificial intelligence paradigm, having a wide range of applications. With the help of genetic programming, one can solve systems that interact with real world, make theories about consequences of their actions and dynamically adjust inductive bias. In addition, there are applications of genetic programming like solving tasks of data mining, robotic soccer gamewhere layered learning approach has been implemented, learning with imprecise or missing datawherein genetic programming approximates the missing values by using correlation input data and eliminating the need of pre-processing and financial genetic programming, etc.

Web Mining Techniques

-- E Naveen Kumar

The World Wide Web is a vibrant information repository. Using Web information in an effective manner christens for the use of Web Mining Techniques. Web mining techniques based on Web mining categories such as Web content mining, Web structure mining, and Web usage mining comprise of various analysis techniques, viz., clustering analysis, Web link analysis, pattern analysis, association analysis and correlation analysis. Information retrieval is a very important process in the World Wide Web because the Web consists of large number of unstructured text-based documents. Retrieving relevant information requires the use of effective techniques like keyword- based retrieval and indexing techniques. This article gives a brief introduction to Web servers and Weblog analysis and presents a detailed description on how these techniques are applied in Web mining.

An Overview of Data Pre-processing in Web Usage Mining

-- Padmajavalli R

Web Mining is an emerging and active area of research in the Internet era. Due to globalization, an increasing number of organizations depend on the World Wide Web. Enormous amount of data are generated automatically, by Web servers and collected in server access logs. Since the information available in the Web is heterogeneous and unstructured, there is a need to pre-process the data to make it easier to mine for knowledge. Web usage mining is a type of Web mining activity that involves the automatic discovery of user access patterns from one or more Web servers and referer logs. This article discusses in-depth, the various steps of pre-processing the data before discovering user's navigation patterns in Web access logs.

BPO: A Business Necessity

-- Harsh Bhargava and Deepak Kumar

In a globally competitive business environment, outsourcing has become a business necessity. Corporates have realized the importance of outsourcing, which is important to retain their competitive advantage. The outsourcing industry, though driven by technology is highly people-centric. The outsourcing service provider has to continually strive to move up the value chain of the BPO-process, not only to maximize the returns, but also to provide value-addition to the client. This paper examines some fundamental issues like: what to outsource, whom to outsource, advantages of outsourcing, associated risks in outsourcing, and advantages for India. BPOs are indeed an emerging paradigm for businesses in future.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs): The Changing Face of Banking in India

Bank Management
Information and communication technology has changed the way in which banks provide services to its customers. These days the customers are able to perform their routine banking transactions without even entering the bank premises. ATM is one such development in recent years, which provides remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. Improved customer service has become very important for the very survival and growth of banking sector in the reforms era. The technological advancements, deregulations, and intense competition due to the entry of private sector and foreign banks have altered the face of banking from one of mere intermediation to one of provider of quick, efficient and customer-friendly services. With the introduction and adoption of ICT in the banking sector, the customers are fast moving away from the traditional branch banking system to the convenient and comfort of virtual banking. The most important virtual banking services are phone banking, mobile banking, Internet banking and ATM banking. These electronic channels have enhanced the delivery of banking services accurately and efficiently to the customers. The ATMs are an important part of a bank’s alternative channel to reach the customers, to showcase products and services and to create brand awareness. This is reflected in the increase in the number of ATMs all over the world. ATM is one of the most widely used remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the growth of ATMs of different bank groups in India.
International Scenario

If ATMs are largely available over geographically dispersed areas, the benefit from using an ATM will increase as customers will be able to access their bank accounts from any geographic location. This would imply that the value of an ATM network increases with the number of available ATM locations, and the value of a bank network to a customer will be determined in part by the final network size of the banking system. The statistical information on the growth of branches and ATM network in select countries.

Indian Scenario

The financial services industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth, diversification and specialization since the initiation of financial sector reforms in 1991. Greater customer orientation is the only way to retain customer loyalty and withstand competition in the liberalized world. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
