The concept and framework of empowerment have been explained through `empowering factors' (respect for team members, attitude of top management to human resources, open communication, opportunities for the application of learning, organizational support for innovation, responsive superior, opportunities for self-development, low formalization, performance-linked feedback, and autonomy) and `empowerment consequences' (self-efficacy, organizational commitment, work environment satisfaction, role satisfaction, and job involvement). Fifteen empowerment variables as mentioned above were measured in two different kinds of organizations: one a public sector manufacturing unit and the other an R&D unit under the government. A comparative empowerment analysis has been carried out in these two organizations. Recommendations have been made for enhancing the empowerment of organizations.

The world is passing through rapid changes. With the development of science and technology coupled with radical changes in human thought, the old barriers dividing one nation from the other are giving way to a new class of world society.

The transition from industrial revolution to information revolution has shifted the focus from muscle power to brain power. Globalization of Indian economy has a significant impact on the business organizations. The competition spurred by the reforms forced corporates to adopt a market oriented approach and to search for better alternatives for the survival and growth of the organizations.

In this endeavor, the employees, irrespective of the designations and roles assigned to them, are valuable for the organization. Therefore, if the companies want to survive in the post-liberalization era, they will have to shed the old `control by command' technique and employ a more effective management tool of empowerment.
