Managers are meant to deal with the incompatible forces while leaders must harness the synergy. That's where managerial leadership comes into play.

Success doesn't mean the absence of failures; it means the attainment of ultimate objectives. It means winning the war, not every battle.

Professor Dick Blackburn of University of North Carolina is credited to have used the expression `managerial leadership' almost two decades ago referring to the challenges managers face in complex organizations. This expression has got permanently etched in the minds of corporate elite and has been a subject of wide debates world over. Ever since, companies have been embarking upon the idea of undertaking leadership development programs for their managers; this is simply because of the fact that managers have been more busy managing (task aspect), neglecting the leading function (people aspect). Yet another hardline adopted by certain CEOs is the view that managers tend to wait to be told what to do while leaders take the initiative and just do it.
