Increasing competition has forced the organizations to devise ways and means to grow, perform and achieve excellence. Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) are being accepted as one of the most effective techniques to strengthen a company's market position and adopt a new technology to gain competitive advantage over other organizations. This article deals with various stages in M&A and the role of HR at each stage.

In today's fast changing business environment characterized by globalization, hypercompetitive organizations need to gear up with innovative strategies to survive and flourish. M&A is one of the strategies to strengthen and maintain their positions in the global market. The deal between many of the largest and most successful global organizations such as Daimler-Chrysler, Chase-JP Morgan, Mckinsey-Envision, UBS-Paine Webber, SKB-Glaxo, Nations Bank-Bank of America, Nestle-Purina, GE-Honeywell and Deutsche Telekom-VoiceStream subscribe to this belief (Seriver, 2001).

According to data sourced from Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, total of 640 M&A aggregating Rs. 16,078 cr were announced during April-September 2002, compared to 629 M&A worth Rs. 13,817 cr during the same period in 2001. Most of these deals took place in chemicals, finance, communications and IT sectors including the BPO segment. It shows that M&A across the globe are on the rise.
