The author states that the general aim of this book is "to ease the path towards successful communication of one's study and research". The major focus of this book is on writing, presenting and publishing.
The book is divided into two parts. While the first part presents a research and writing skills development program, the second part covers specific types of writing like literature review, research proposals, thesis writing, etc.
The
first part has four chapters dealing with general issues in academic writing like
managing the writing environment; mastering writing and critiquing practices;
understanding academic practices with regard to writing style; and developing
whole text. The second part has five chapters. While the first three chapters
cover issues specific to different types of writing like literature review, research
proposals, thesis writing, etc. the last two chapters discuss presentation (oral
and visual) and publication of the output. In
Chapter 1, the author recommends using a self management matrix adapted from Covey
(1994) in order to create an efficient writing environment. Setting up timelines
and self-monitoring plans assist in the management of self and writing activity,
and reduces stress. Supervisors, colleagues, friends and family can be sources
of support if one cultivates their understanding. |
