Mango an important fruit crop in India, which accounts for about 45% of
the world production, but fresh mango exports constitute only 8% of world
output. The mango pulp exports and other mango processed product exports,
are rising, in recent years. The paper identifies that India is having
comparative advantage in exporting mangoes to Dubai and UK. The mango
pulp exports are faced with stringent regulations such as Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Point (HACCP), India needs to adopt these standards in an
organized manner to meet the high value export demand. The recent
development of Agro-Export Zones (AEZs) performance is also examined
in this study. The study finds out that out of the ten mango AEZs performance,
some of them are not up to the mark. The performance on the side of
government agencies is quite good, but the participation of entrepreneurs
and farmers is lagging the overall performance of these AEZs. There is a
greater need to encourage entrepreneurs and farmers to participate in AEZs
activities through development of India unique processed products, which
add value to the farmers’ produce at international markets.
Mango is the most important fruit covering about 40% of total 3.7 million of fruit area and
accounting 25% of total 45.4 million tonnes fruit production in the country, which is the
highest in the world with its share of about 44% of world mango production.
Even though Indiaís share in mango production is 44%, its contribution in fresh mango
exports was only 8% of total worldís fresh mango exports. The major fresh mango exporting
countries are Mexico (34% of total fresh mango exports), Brazil (16%) and Pakistan (9%). The
export share of Brazil and Pakistan has been increased significantly during 1996 to 2002 as
against slight increase in export share of India. The major reason for slow growth of Indiaís
share of total fresh mango exports might be that yield levels are low compared to major
mango exporting countries, further yield levels are decreased between 1996 to 2002 (Table 1),
which reduced cost competitiveness of Indian mangoes compared to competing exporters.
