A library is more than just stacks of books on shelves. It requires highly
trained people for organization, cataloging, to help researchers, notify new
publications, etc. The digital library contains more information than a traditional
library, because it adds on to the services like organization of information and
search support. There is a growing preference for Internet to traditional libraries
because Internet is convenient, easy to use, always open and full of up-to-date
material (Church, 2006). A manager and a worker need to obtain information
regarding their customers, suppliers or their own situation. E-libraries help the
managers to get right information at the right time. Many of the corporate repositories
are made available to the general public with a few restrictions in accordance
with the rules of open access.
An electronic library consists of electronic material and services (Roy,
1999). Electronic material includes digital material as well as a variety of analog
formats that require electricity. Digital Library is a combined technology and
information resources to allow remote access, breaking down the physical barriers
between resources. Digital library is a "collection of digital objects (text, video,
audio) along with the method for access and retrieval (as far as users are
concerned) and also for selection, organization and maintenance".
For a further explanation, digital library is a complex area, which covers a
large number of heterogeneous disciplines and fields. Digital library is an
electronic library which every organization maintains. A password is created to access
that library. It involves electronic storage of all the documents of the company
and provides a physical access to the document. Companies can perform
more substantive, accurate and consistent analysis using digital library to
make decisions. One of the best examples of a virtual library is the Networked
Computer Science Technical Reports Library (NCSTRL). |
