Under the leadership of Pankaj R Patel, Zydus-Cadila has emerged as a leading player in the domestic pharmaceutical industry. The company is strong in anti-bacterials cardiovasculars, anti-inflammatory, gastro-intestinal and biologicals therapeutics segments. It has famous brands like Aten, Pantodac, Ocid and Penegra. Zydus is also strengthening its research capabilities.

The operations of the Zydus-Cadila group include pharmaceuticals (formulations and bulk drugs), diagnostics, herbal products and skincare products. Domestic formulations form the large part of Zydus-Cadila's (Zydus) business portfolio. The company mainly operates in five therapeutic segmentsZydus sells more than 80 products in the domestic market. Eight products feature among the ORG Top 300 Brands. Zydus has successfully reduced formulation sales under DPCO (Drugs Price Control Order) from as high as 47% in FY 96 to 32% in FY 00. Zydus also markets cosmetic and diagnostic products. But these two businesses currently constitute less than 5% of the turnover.

Zydus enjoys a very strong brand equity with doctors. This is reflected in the large contribution of new products to sales (36%). The only other company to have a higher sales contribution from new products is Sun Pharma (40%). In a recent ORG-MARG study the medical fraternity rated Zydus-Cadila as one of the top-rated companies amongst doctors.

Zydus is strong in reverse engineering. It is strengthening its research capabilities.The company has built a state-of-the-art R&D facility at Moraiya near Ahmedabad at a cost of Rs. 500 mn. It became fully operational in 2001. At present Zydus Research Center (ZRC) employs135 highly qualified scientists.
