In this paper, we argue for the importance of applying various strategic considerations to the utilization of multimedia technologies, with particular reference to their use as training aids. The study provides a practical illustration and reinforcement of the principle that a strong strategic base is essential within the development of information systems and a case for the value of multimedia technologies. Also, we underline the importance of a strategic approach if the potential offered by multimedia training is to be realized. Finally, we propose specific guidelines regarding the formulation of such a strategy.
Since the defining of the MPC (Multimedia Personal Computer) standard in 1990, each subsequent year has seen a rapid increase in application of the technology and sales of multimedia machines. There is substantial evidence that multimedia has really arrived as a power to be reckoned with, and utilized within, business computing.
The last few years saw the sales of multimedia machines overtake those of standard machines and although, this was primarily due to the growth within the home and small office market, an increasing number of office machines are beginning to incorporate sound and video capabilities. A further boost has undoubtedly come since the introduction of MMX technology in the Pentium processors in 1998, and now forms an integral part of all subsequent Intel Pentium processors.
