Tata Tea Ltd (TTL) is the second largest player in the domestic tea industry. After the Tetley acquisition, TTL became the second largest multinational in the global tea market. TTL's famous brands include Tata Tea, Agni, Kanan Devan, Chakra and Gemini. In order to strengthen its competitive position, TTL is now putting greater resources behind brand building and intends to have a brand positioned strongly in every segment of the market.

Incorporated in 1962,Tata Tea Ltd (TTL) is the second largest player in the domestic tea industry. It revolutionized branded tea retailing in India by offering the country's first poly-packed tea in the mid 80s. After the Tetley acquisition in 2000, TTL became the second largest company in the global tea market. In 2002, TTL had a 19 % share in the domestic packaged tea market. TTL's famous brands include Tata Tea, Agni, Kanan Devan, Chakra and Gemini. In India, TTL owns 55 tea estates with an area of 26,500 hectares under cultivation. Annually it produces over 60 million kg of black tea and 2 million kg of instant tea and operates 11 modern packaging units across the country. TTL has three R&D centers located in Assam, Munnar and Bangalore. The instant tea manufacturing facility for exports, located at Munnar, is the largest such factory in the world, outside US.

TTL commenced operations in 1962 as Tata Finlay in a joint venture with James Finlay & Co., Glasgow, UK. Initially, the company started with an instant tea factory at Munnar and blending/ packaging unit at Bangalore. In 1963, the company entered into a technical and financial collaboration with James Finlay & Co., Glasgow, UK. In 1976, it acquired Sterling Tea Co., from James Finlay & Co., and its seven associates. The foreign holdings by James Finlay and Mcleod Russell were acquired by Tata Industries in December 1982. The company's name was changed to Tata Tea Limited in 1983.
