Good decision-making ability is the key to managerial success. What are the characteristics of good managerial decisionmaking?

Management is the procedure of getting things done through employees by the manager who accomplishes these objectives by first creating a conducive environment and then directing the efforts of the staff for their optimum performance. The very process of creating and directing involves a series of decisions concerning the ‘what, why, how, who and when’ of the business situation he is into. In fact every waking minute of a manager is spent in taking some decision or the other. To that extent one could say that managers are paid for only one thing—making sound decisions. Decision-making Process The decision-making process is an intellectual activity involving careful study and critical evaluation of various options available and finally selecting the most appropriate one using sound judgment. There are various schools of thought on this. Some feel that this skill is inherent and no subsequent training can help, while others contradict this theory, arguing that any person with basic intelligence can sharpen his decision-making skills with training, practice and experience. The latter opinion has withstood the test of time. Any decisionmaking process goes through the following steps: Identify and define the problem. Gather information and generate alternatives.
