In spite of the great hype about mobile business since the last two years, few organizations have embraced it. Though the awareness of m-business is on the rise, few organizations world over have actually used mbusiness applications in their business processes. This article provides insights on the expectations from mobile business by organizations and individual customers in future.

Only a few years ago electronic commerce (e-commerce) visionaries were predicting the rapid acceptance of mobile business (m-business) as the natural result of the e-commerce revolution. According to those visionaries by now most of the US population should be paying bills and shopping with mobile phones or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and receive updated flight information on their way to the airport. Cold reality reveals a different situation. The wireless industry is now lowering its expectations for revenue growth and consumers have not accepted m-business as widely as expected. The New York Stock Exchange Wireless Index saw its value drop by half in the last 24 months. Countless start-ups have evaporated and the telecommunications industry appears to be in depression.

Yet, positive signs that m-business will finally emerge a success are beginning to appear. For instance, Sprint has just activated its 3G network in all the markets it serves across the US. Other nations, most notably China, is also moving forward with its 3G initiatives. Interestingly, the Chinese are completely replacing their wireless infrastructure with packet IP-based 3G systems. Moreover, ComScore Networks has revealed its latest statistics confirming that almost 10 million wired Internet users have also accessed the wireless Internet using mobile phones or PDAs (ComStore Networks, 2002).
