Management Development Programs (MDPs) have been growing in numbers in India. The objective of an MDP is to provide the participating executives or managers with requisite management knowledge about any particular management area. This article is a comparative analysis based on a study of published data and discusses various issues regarding MDPs.

Almost all the top Business Schools in India as well as specialized institutions such as Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and Center for Organizational Development (COD) are offering a number of Management Development Programs (MDPs) to provide management education to corporate executives. The courses have a diverse range, both in terms of time span (e.g., the duration can range from one day to four months) as well as the specificity of the program, for example, from focused topics like Performance Management in Electronic Business to elementary Management Education Program. Most of the reputed Business Schools are conducting around 3540 MDPs in a year. Though the focus is mostly on General Management topics and topics in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management, there are programs available for all management disciplines. The following section consists of a comparative analysis of the MDP programs offered by some of the top institutions of India.

The sample consists of 11 institutions, (Institutions because all are not Business Schools) namely, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai, Center for Organizational Development (COD) Hyderabad, IIMC, IIMB, IIML, IIMA, International Management Institute (IMI) New Delhi, IIFT Delhi, XLRI Jamshedpur, ASCI Hyderabad and Fore School of Management New Delhi. Only the open programs offered by these institutions were studied and the following inferences were drawn.
