Ever since man invented the wheel, mobility has been evolving. The need for transportation far outpaces the rate of growth of the infrastructure upon which the transportation depends, causing huge bottlenecks and issues. This article identifies a few trouble areas of road transportation and explores how technology can aid in making the roads much safer with smarter motor vehicles, without having to redo the entire expansive infrastructure. This is a concept paper combining many pioneering trends across the globe with the indigenous ideas of the authors.

With the rapid urban sprawl cities are growing in leaps and bounds pushing the boundaries. As the community grows, the local governing bodies scramble the resources to create an infrastructure that can sustain and futuristically meet the growing demand for mobility of people. Often communities experience many hurdles in implementing transit systems to be on par with the communities with better systems. Rapid globalization and international exposure of the residents bring in tremendous pressure on the local bodies to upkeep, or, in many cases, revamp the existing transport infrastructure to meet the global standards.

Personal automobiles constitute a major portion in the suburbs while public transits try desperately to impress upon the city dwellers to be the choice of transportation. Both the public and private transport vehicles compete to utilize the public infrastructure of the roads.

Congested highways, traffic jams, long hours of commuting, smog, pollution, road rage and honking are the norms of almost every community across the globe. Not to forget, the poor road conditions and the constant financial crunch of the national and local bodies to upkeep the roads-all add up to a pathetic state of affairs. A simple honk of a car distracts every car on the road triggering a chain of road rage or traffic distractions leading to fatal accidents. Unsafe vehicles being driven on the highways, speeders and aggressive drivers causing horrific driving experience for the rest of the folks, are all contributors to the current pathetic state of affairs. As an alternative when people try to opt for the public transit, things seem to be even worse since public transit still has major road transport dependency to cater to the growing communities.
